Overview
The Ortur R2 is an uncommon machine in that it's half baked existence and lack of polish interferes with it's ability to be as useful or innovative as its creators intended. While capable in it's own right, there's nothing about it I would consider easy to use. The app leaves SO MUCH to be desired and while Lightburn compatibility is technically there it clearly plays second fiddle to the insufficient app experience. There's a lot to love about this laser; the size, the overall design and, as always, Ortur's first class laser modules. Still, it's hard to say those things make up for a down right bad software experience, broken homing technology and other issues that simply shouldn't exist in the year 2025 on a machine at this price.

While I did receive this review unit from Ortur for free, I was not paid for a review (positive or otherwise) and this review is based entirely on my own personal testing and opinions. Additionally, Ortur did not have the opportunity to see or make changes to this review before it was published. In this review, I will walk you through my personal experience using the R2 and I'll touch on everything I think you should know before deciding to make a purchase in order to help you figure out whether or not this machine is for you. While I'm grateful you guys value my opinion, make sure to always do your own due diligence before deciding to make a laser purchase. This machine is available in multiple configurations. The kit I was sent included the 20W 455nm diode module w/ air pump and the 1.3W IR module, which runs just over $1,100, so I've got high expectations.

The R2 arrived in secure packaging that make me confident it could survive a rough trip. Lots of cardboard, lots of foam. Ortur did write me to say they sent more sample material than the normally would with this laser so disregard the giant pile of blanks. Once you get it out of the box you're greeted by pretty much the entire unit. There really isn't any assembly required which we love to see. A few of our favorite things they included as pack-ins are these massive physical posters with a huge selection of presets for dozens of materials across their various diode modules. I love this and really appreciate it. Everyone loves just slapping QR codes on everything these days and damnit I hate reading things on screens when I could instead have something like this. It's a great addition and one that hasn't gone unnoticed. Everything else was satisfactory including a sturdy feeling power adapter as well as the included air assist tubing and exhaust hoses. All the gear you need to get started is in the box and only a couple small things need to be put together. The air pump for air assist needs a small adapter to get to the right hose size for the air inlet on the rear of the machine. They also include the worlds most rudimentary air flow control in the form of this little locking clasp. It gets the job done but could easily and inexpensively be replaced by an actual flow control valve that would be much easier to use and keep track of. The other thing you'll want to make sure you do is install the exhaust ducting onto the rear of the machine which can be very easily installed with four simple screws mounting. I also forgot to mention these crappy cut blades, there are four of them, which aren't enough, and they just loosely sit in your workspace however you feel like throwing them in there. Don't bother looking for some way to lock them into place, or a certain distance apart, it's not there. They're literally designed to just be thrown in however and I hate that. I'm sure they'd work in a pinch but thankfully the work bed is removable to give you bottom panel pass through on this machine. For the majority of my cutting during my time with this machine I opted to use the MUCH nicer cut plate I was sent along with my Ortur Laser Master 3. Luckily this cut bet fits the R2 almost perfectly with the machine sitting on top so that was a nice surprise that made cutting much easier than it would have been otherwise.
The Ortur R2 has a solid, confidence-inspiring build and it's the main reason I was so hopeful for this machine when it first came in. The R2’s gantry is quick at 20,000mm/m or just over 300mm/s - which makes it one of the faster hobby-grade diode machines I’ve tested. I'm glad it can zip around too, it helps navigate the module around the big 300x190mm workspace. If you're using one of the smaller modules it'll get you another 20mm of y-axis as well bringing the total area to 300x210mm. Nice. The frame feels sturdy, and the protective cover is genuinely well thought out, not just an afterthought. Interestingly, it was one of the most difficult interlock switches to defeat for filming. You have to make a serious effort to defeat the interlocks in any meaningful way, which is great news for the safety conscious. I also appreciate that Ortur included an emergency stop button right on the chassis, something many of the machines in this class still lack. Additionally they've opted to build a LightBurn camera directly into the lid which I think is a really nice touch for workflow and positioning and something you usually only see on more expensive machines. The articulating display is another highlight: the colors are vibrant, the viewing angles are great, and it makes operating the machine feel a bit more premium. Unfortunately the screen does pretty much nothing, but we'll talk about that later. So overall, the R2’s hardware and specs are strong but not flawless, still it's mostly a mix of smart, premium touches that make the R2 feel premium when handling it.
The laser modules are where the Ortur R2 really shines, no pun intended. This isn't a surprise - Ortur has always masterfully crafted their laser modules and they always have been and always will be some of the best on the market. With the bundle they sent me, you get two incredible options: the LU3-20A, a 20-watt 455nm blue diode laser, and the LR4-1A, a 1.3-watt 1064nm infrared module. Both of them deliver outstanding performance. They also offer packages with one option or the other, and an additional package with their amazing LU2-10A 10W module which I adore, so there are lots of ways you can have this machine kitted out if you decide to make a purchase. The 20-watt blue module has excellent spot accuracy, impressive cutting power for its size, and it even produces surprisingly beautiful photo engravings. Ortur suggests the spot for this module is around 0.08 x 0.08mm. I measured about .14mm in our spot test on plywood which is a less-than-ideal testing scenario so I feel like their estimates are probably accurate on better substrates. They also included a built-in focal gauge on this head, which makes setup fast and consistent every time, and ensures you're getting the smallest dot possible when trying to accomplish detail oriented tasks. What does that mean for you? Well gorgeous photos of course. I was able to get near perfect photo work right out of the box with Lightburn and a little dot width adjustment. It's truly impressive. 20W is also MORE than enough for most cutting tasks you'd tackle with a machine in this class though there are some serious issues with cutting related to the machine itself which we'll have to circle back around to a little later on in this review. For now I also have to mention the 1064nm infrared module, and this thing is a monster in its own category. It features a red-dot targeting laser for easy alignment, and the power density it delivers is exceptional. The module may only be 1.3W but since it's focused so closely to the material and the spot size is so compact it's abilities are seriously impressive. It’s strong enough to mark brass cleanly, something that’s almost unheard of at this price point. I have to give it props for saving my butt too on this 12 inch brass plate a customer ordered. I had gone through 3 plates trying to get it right on my 80W fiber with a 300mm lens and simply wasn't getting the energy density necessary to mark the plate consistently. I threw a fresh plate in the Ortur R2 and like magic, I had a perfect customer-ready plate. That's pretty cool. Together, these two laser modules make the R2 incredibly versatile, letting you move seamlessly between organic materials and metals with professional-level results. It makes it all the more frustrating that literally every other part of this machine constantly tries to get in the way of you using them effectively, but the modules themselves are excellent.
On paper, the Ortur R2 has the specs to deliver strong performance - and in many ways, it does. It’s capable of tackling a wide range of engraving and cutting jobs at genuinely high speeds, and the high-power laser modules make it possible to take on pro-level projects that most diode machines can’t touch. The large bed size also gives you plenty of room for bigger pieces, which is great for batch work or larger engravings. But all of that potential is overshadowed by one massive issue: re-homing accuracy. Every time the R2 returns home, it loses its exact position, particularly along the Y-axis. That means if you try to rerun a job, or even perform a second pass, it won’t line up correctly. For a precision tool like this, that’s completely unacceptable at any price point. As a result, if you need multiple passes for a project, they all have to be queued and run back-to-back without letting the machine return home. Otherwise, your alignment will be off. This single flaw severely impacts what could have been excellent performance. When we reached out to Ortur about the problem, the representative told us, “After checking, the main line of the first batch of goods was a little shorter, which may cause some machines to rebound after zeroing.” Naturally we asked how to fix it and their only suggestion was to decrease the area of the work area artificially to reduce the "bounce back" effect caused by the cable. To humor their suggestion I tried it. A lot. Like a lot a lot. The results were disappointing. After reducing my work area with stoppers up to an additional 50mm there was still no noticeable change. Was it really just the first batch? I don't know. If you own one of these let me know when you got it and if this issue effects you but it seems like an awful risk to take considering the consequences.
This is where the Ortur R2 really starts to stumble. The software experience is, frankly, a mess. Let’s start with the Inspiraesth app, which is supposed to be the main companion for the machine. As of this review, it’s not even available through normal channels. You have to sideload it, and worse — it comes as an APKX file, which means you can’t install it directly. You actually need to download another app just to install this one. That’s a frustrating and unnecessary extra step that most users simply won’t want to deal with. Even after you get it installed, the experience doesn’t improve much. The app feels unfinished. Limited functionality, confusing menus, and the output quality just can’t compare to what you get in LightBurn. There’s no vector-based editing at all; everything is rasterized, which makes it feel clunky and restrictive especially when trying to do something precise and having to deal with the arbitrary margins of the raster previews when trying to size things correctly. Now, the good news: the R2 is compatible with LightBurn, and it performs well there. That’s where it earns a few points back. But even LightBurn has its headaches with this machine. For example, the IR module constantly triggers flame detection, and there’s no way to disable that setting from within LightBurn. The only solution is to physically unplug the sensors. It’s a giant hassle, and there’s no documentation or warning about it anywhere, I had to figure that out myself. Then there’s the onboard screen, which, while bright and beautiful, doesn’t actually do much. You can’t control the laser manually unless you’re running a preloaded job. There’s no jog control during setup, no real-time adjustments, and no way to update firmware directly through the interface, despite the machine's Wi-Fi connection. Jobs sent from LightBurn aren’t saved in the job history, stored jobs don’t show previews, and overall, it just feels like a huge missed opportunity. For comparison, even much cheaper machines, like the Algo Laser Pixi, have a fully functional touchscreen OS that lets you control motion, settings, firmware updates, and even basic design creation right on the device. The R2’s screen, by contrast, looks premium but behaves like a glorified status display. Massive software updates are needed here to make the user experience live up to how impressive the hardware looks.
With a little math based on their listing numbers we can figure the base machine if it didn't include any modules at all would cost around $530. That means you're paying sticker price, $319, for the 1.3W 1064nm module in any configuration. That's expected and fine, they're expensive to produce and this particular IR module performs so it's worth the price. It's also worth noting you're saving quite a bit off the sticker price of the 20W 455nm module whether you get the IR module or not. Either configuration you're spending $269 for the 20W diode module where as if you bought it separately you'd be paying $549. That's a solid deal. Unfortunately that savings ends up subsidizing the cost of the R2 itself. While $269 is a screaming deal for this excellent diode module, the $530 you're spending on the R2 machine is most definitely not. Consistency issues with homing and consistency leave a lot to be desired and much, much less expensive machines (looking at you Pixi) ship with complete touch screen controllers that offer vastly more enjoyable user experiences. While the build quality is pretty nice in general, sloppy implementations of the work bed and field size switch are disappointing and the lack of consideration for Lightburn users who own the IR module is frustrating. For $530 in 2025, and completely ignoring the excellent laser modules (and they are excellent), I expect better and you should too.
Recommendation
So, where does all of this leave us? The Ortur R2 has some genuinely impressive hardware - the chassis feels solid, the cover is well-designed, and the laser modules themselves are outstanding. In fact, the modules are the best part of this entire package. If you already own an Ortur Laser Master 3, you’re getting nearly the same cutting and engraving performance for far less money and with far fewer headaches and I'd instead recommend you consider simply purchasing the modules as an upgrade. The R2’s software, usability, and reliability drag it down hard. The broken homing system alone is a deal-breaker for anyone doing precise work, and the current app situation is flat-out unacceptable for a machine in this price bracket. Until Ortur commits to major firmware and software updates, and proves they’ve fixed the re-homing issue, this just isn’t a machine I can recommend. At the end of the day, the R2 feels like a promising prototype that escaped into production. The foundation is solid, but the execution needs work - a lot of it, and that's why we think the Ortur R2 has earned a 6.3/10. Not good, not terrible. If Ortur can polish the software, fix the alignment issues, and give users proper control through LightBurn, this could be a truly great machine. But as it stands right now, you’re better off sticking with the Laser Master 3 and pairing it with these excellent new modules instead.
