Overview

If lasers were toys, they would all look like the Ortur R1... BUT - lasers aren't toys, they're lasers, and this machine feels cramped, cheap and dangerous. Starting at around $200, the Ortur R1 is the absolute cheapest laser Ortur could have produced, with the absolute bare minimum housing that leaves you with a device that feels better suited for shelf space at target than a maker machine purchased for creating products and gifts. Frankly it's wild to me that someone thought a $200 laser was a good idea. (Generally $200 lasers are a terrible idea - just look at Amazon...) I'm all for keeping things inexpensive and accessible, but there's a point where you simply shouldn't be building systems like this. The Ortur R1 might just be the most confusing laser I’ve reviewed to date. Ortur has a long history of setting the standard for what a diode laser should be. Machines like the Laser Master 2, the Laser Master 3, and even the Aufero Laser 1 taught me what great value and solid engineering look like in the entry-level space. But somehow, with the R1, Ortur managed to lose its way. What should have been a compact, affordable entry point for new users instead feels like a rushed experiment that never made it past the prototype stage. It technically works - you can burn some wood, engrave a logo, etch a little acrylic - but almost every design choice feels compromised, like the people who built this thing forgot why their earlier machines were so good.

While I did receive this review unit from Ortur for free, I was not paid for a review (positive or otherwise) and this review is based entirely on my own personal testing and opinions. Additionally, Ortur did not have the opportunity to see or make changes to this review before it was published. In this review, I will walk you through my personal experience using the R1 and I'll touch on everything I think you should know before deciding to make a purchase in order to help you figure out whether or not this machine is for you. While I'm grateful you guys value my opinion, make sure to always do your own due diligence before deciding to make a laser purchase. This machine is available in multiple configurations. The kit I was sent included the 5W 455nm diode module. Let's find out what $229.00 gets you and whether or not it can stand on it's own as a functional piece of equipment.

I’ll give credit where it’s due: the packaging is actually pretty good. The R1 comes in a nicely printed box with dense foam padding that keeps everything snug and secure. The machine ships folded to save space, and when you unpack it, you’re greeted by clear setup instructions printed right on the baseplate, which is a clever touch. Setting it up is as simple as flipping the loose portion of the frame over and pressing it down until it clicks into place. Inside, the gantry and laser module are protected by additional foam, and the box includes a power adapter and USB cable. You peel the film off the acrylic shield, plug it in, and you’re technically ready to go. It’s a decent unboxing experience overall, but this box is missing some major items that we're going to cover a little later on in the episode (I'm NOT looking at you, invisible exhaust hose) While it's nice to open it stops short of what a responsible manufacturer should deliver, so let's talk about the hardware.

Let's take a bite out of the hardware. The R1 is TIGHT inside. With the blue diode module you're looking at 100x100mm and with the IR module it's even tighter at 100x80mm. This is pretty standard for lasers this small but man the housing makes it so much worse. The opening you have into the machine is so small and tight and it often feels like in order to do anything productive within the boundaries you're going to have to fold the thing back up into it's travel position to get simple maintenance done or adjust the laser module. Maximum speed? About 5000mm/m or roughly 80mm/s. That’s slow by modern standards, but fine for a compact machine, especially one that I think feels like it has the structural integrity of a soda can. The R1’s entire body is made from injection-molded ABS plastic. That includes the housing, the base, even the power button. Structurally, it flexes if you apply any pressure. The whole thing feels more like a toy than a tool - lightweight, hollow, and fragile. Drop it once, and you’ll likely be shopping for a replacement. Around the back, you get the basics: a 24-volt power jack, USB port for the safety key, microSD slot, USB-C for connecting to a computer, and the usual reset and boot buttons Ortur includes on most of their machines. The spec sticker tells us it supports either the LU3-5B diode laser or the LR4-1A infrared module, depending on which version you buy. Power input is 24 volts at 2 amps, and the laser wavelength is either 450±20nm or 1064±1nm for the IR option. We're coming back to that ±20nm a little later on, it's a big issue. We're burying the lead here though - something pretty important is completely missing. There’s no way to safely exhaust fumes. Ortur advertises a “built-in extraction fan,” but it’s not connected to anything. There’s no ducting, no hose adapter, no filtration option. It just blows smoke straight out into your workspace. That might be fine if this were a toy, but it’s a class 1 laser device. Ortur’s design makes no sense. It’s just venting smoke into your workspace, and there’s no way to connect a proper exhaust. For a company that once made some of the safest open-frame machines around, that’s a shocking oversight. The front acrylic door doesn’t help either. It rides loosely on thin metal rails, held open with tiny magnets, and closes mostly by gravity. The result? It constantly jams. You have to lift both sides perfectly evenly to avoid binding. And then there’s the interlock - a critical safety feature that’s supposed to disable the laser when the door’s open. Mine worked sometimes, but when it failed, it failed in the open position which rendered the laser unusable even when the door was closed. Eventually, I had to bypass it entirely just to get the laser to function. I ended up removing the door to hack the interlock. It's run by this tiny little board glued to the side of the machine. I cut the wires and shorted the signal wire to the controller so that the machine would always recognize the door as closed. If you own this laser and aren't having problems with this I NEVER recommend defeating interlocks for my viewers - but if you're sitting on a paperweight due to this issue that ended up being what worked for me. Other machines at this price point, like the Algo Laser Pixi, use a much better design with a simple top-access hatch, metal hinges, and a real safety interlock that works every time. Compared to that, the R1’s build quality is frustrating and uninspired.

Normally, this is where Ortur claws back some points, because historically their laser modules are excellent. But the LU3-5B (the module that ships with the R1) is not one of their best efforts. The R1 is technically compatible with the LR4-1A infrared module, which I actually like a lot, but that’s the same module used on the R2, and it deserves a better host than this plastic box. This review is focused on the LU3-5B since the R1 is the only laser that ships with this module and it's what most users are going to end up with when making this purchase especially if they're after the cheapest option. On paper, it’s a 5-watt blue diode with a claimed spot size of 0.025 × 0.11 mm. In practice, I measured closer to 0.12 to 0.15 mm, with a noticeable heat-affected zone around each burn. The LU2-10A, despite being a higher-power module, has a smaller, tighter beam profile. Even Ortur’s older LU2-4 SF module outperformed this one in sharpness and contrast. Why? A few theories. The LU3-5B’s wavelength tolerance is 450±20nm, compared to the much tighter 450±5nm spec on just about every other laser module they manufacture. That means beam quality and optical alignment vary more from unit to unit. It also has a 60mm focal length, which is longer than most Ortur modules, leading to a wider beam divergence. The result isn’t bad — it engraves fine, it’s functional, but it doesn’t meet the high standard Ortur themselves set. The module works, but it’s unremarkable, and coming from a brand that built its reputation on excellent diodes, that’s extremely disappointing.

Here’s where everything collapses. Every compromise in the hardware and laser module feeds directly into the R1’s poor performance. The slow gantry, the mediocre optics, the weak frame - all of it adds up. This machine struggles with even basic engraving tasks. There’s no air assist, so cutting is completely off the table. In my tests on thin plywood, it couldn’t make a simple, clean, linear cut - even after multiple passes. The wood just scorched and charred. Detail engraving is passable if you don’t look too closely, but the results are inconsistent. Lines blur, edges feather, and material response varies depending on the quality of the diode module you ended up with. You can get an image out of it, but it never looks clean, and I tried, A LOT. That’s what frustrates me most. Ortur knows how to make machines that perform. They’ve done it time and again. The Laser Master 3 is still one of the most excellent diode engravers on the market. But the R1? It’s not even in the same league. I've said it a lot but I have to repeat that it feels more like a toy than a tool, which is both sad and a little scary when you consider that this is still a laser that can cause real harm if used carelessly. If this was meant for classrooms or family craft projects, fine, but then where’s the proper ventilation? Where’s the safety enclosure that actually works? As it stands, the R1 is too weak for serious makers and too risky for beginners.

If you decide to tough it out and actually use the R1, you’ve got two options: LightBurn or the Inspiraesth mobile app. Let’s start with the good news - yes, it does work with LightBurn, and yes, that’s the better option. But Ortur still hasn’t provided a preconfigured profile, so you’ll have to set it up manually. It’s not difficult, but it’s another small frustration that adds to the pile. The Inspiraesth app, on the other hand, is the same problem I called out during the R2 review: clunky layout, poor workflow, and limited control. It’s clearly designed for casual users, but it actually makes simple jobs harder. The app forces raster-first processing, the dropdowns are awkward, and you can’t type in exact values where it matters. Despite all of this, companies keep doing the same thing lately: building bad apps instead of investing in better hardware or improving LightBurn integration. LightBurn already exists, it’s nearly perfect, and users actually like it. Why not focus on making that experience smoother instead of reinventing the wheel with worse software? I also ran into power warnings and communication errors when the R1 was connected to a bad outlet — issues that were only visible by digging through the GRBL console. That’s not user-friendly behavior. So while LightBurn support saves it from being unusable, the experience as a whole is clunky, inconsistent, and uninspired.

So, after all that, at least it’s cheap, right? Well… sort of. The base model I reviewed costs $229 with the 5W LU3-5B module. You can step up to $399 for the 1.3W IR module or $459 for a bundle with both. But the problem is — even at $229 — the R1 just doesn’t make sense. The Algo Laser Pixi, this machines direct competitor in every sense, is $179 with a 3W module and already includes a proper exhaust port, a touchscreen, an internal OS, and a cleaner, more robust enclosure. The 5W version of that same machine? $229! The exact same price as the R1. If you’re willing to spend a little more, the Laser Master 3 — a vastly superior, full-featured Ortur machine — is only $329. So what’s the value proposition here? Who’s this machine for? It’s under powered for makers, too inconsistent for hobbyists, and too unsafe for casual users. The R1 is technically inexpensive but when EVERY corner that can be cut HAS been cut to get this price the value is absolutely crushed.

Recommendation

The Ortur R1 feels like a product from a company that’s forgotten its own strengths. It’s light, slow, frustrating to operate, and built from materials that do nothing to inspire confidence. The laser module is average, the hardware feels like a prototype, and the usability just isn’t there. For a brand that once led the charge in affordable laser engraving, this is a major step backward. I don’t say that lightly, I’ve been one of Ortur’s biggest supporters over the years, but this is the weakest machine they’ve ever released. The R1 technically works, but that’s about it. It’s not a tool you can trust to deliver consistent, safe, or worthwhile results, and that’s a shame, because Ortur used to be the brand I recommended without hesitation. We gave the Ortur R1 a 4.2/10, the lowest score we've ever delivered. If you’re considering this machine, skip it. Spend the extra hundred bucks on the Laser Master 3, or save yourself fifty and grab the Algo Pixi. You’ll get more power, better build quality, and a far more pleasant experience all around. The R1, sadly, isn’t the future of entry-level lasers — it’s a reminder of how quickly a good company can lose its focus when it stops listening to the makers who built its reputation in the first place and that's why we think it deserves a 4.2/10. Let's hope Ortur finds it's way back to the light in the next set of releases because this direction simply isn't sustainable for it's core market and that is a serious let down.
